Indian Premier League is is a Twenty20 cricket competition initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) . The first season of the Indian Premier League commenced on 18 April 2008. It includes 8 teams or "franchises" consisting of players from different countries.

TechCrunch is reporting that Google Maps will now include biking directions in the U.S. When you clicked on "Get Directions" on Google Maps, you would see "By Car, By Public Transit, Walking". Now Google has added "Bicycling" to directions.

When you select "Bicycling" for directions, the appearance of Google Maps changes as follows:

Dark Green Lines represent Bicycle trails with no motor vehicles
Light Green Lines represent streets with Bicycle Lanes
Dashed Green lines represent other streets recommended for biking

In addition you can turn on Biking Layer in the MORE menu.

Over the years I earned MCSE certification (late 90's) and then Sun Java Programmer Certification in 2003. Both Microsoft and Sun gave me a paper "Certificate" and it felt great at the time.

Fast forward to December 2009 and I enrolled into "Google Qualified Developer" program for JS Maps API and fulfilled the program requirements (BTW cost of the program is $0.00). Like others I was expecting a "Certificate". WOW! Unbelievable.... FedEX package from Google gets delivered yesterday. I open it and this is what I get as a PRIZE. How cool is that... Thanks Google!!

GeoEye has released a high resolution (half-meter) satellite image of the tallest manmade structure in the world. This skyscraper (Burj Khalifa) is 828 meters (2,717 feet) tall.

Check this clear/sharp image which was taken by GeoEye-1 satellite from 423 miles in space on February 9, 2010.

I did not hear about Swami Nithyananda up until yesterday. Now a lot of people know about Swami all over the world after news came out from India about Swami's sex tape with a Tamil Actress. Earthquakes from around the world in last 24 hours

There is a lot of activity/movement going on deep inside our Earth. This Google Maps Mashup I created shows the latest earthquakes from around the world during last 24 hours. The data source for this mashup is usgs.gov.

The map plots the markers for all the earthquakes during last 24 hours with the information window opening up for the most recent earthquake first. The information window has a forward/back arrow which will take you to the next/prev earthquake. The map initially is in auto-play mode as the next information window opens up after every 8 seconds. The auto-play mode is cancelled once you click on the arrow buttons.

Google, Kansas. Yes for the next month the capital of Kansas will be Google, Kansas instead of Topeka, Kansas.

This, it looks like is related to Google's plan to "sell 1 gigabit-per-second fiber optic broadband to consumers" to no fewer than 50,000 homes in the initial test, and maybe as many as 500,000. Google though has not specified where it plans to roll this out. Topeka, Kansas is going all out to get Google to implement this in Topeka.

Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten signed a proclamation Monday calling for Topeka to be known for the month of March as "Google, Kansas — the capital city of fiber optics."

Google's Fusion Tables is a place where you can store tons of data. You can then with couple of clicks visualize that data instantly on Google Maps or as Intensity Map. You can also view it as a Line, Bar, Pie, Scatter diagrams.

Columns with locations are interpreted automatically, and you can adjust them directly on a map if necessary. You can apply filter and aggregate tools for more selective visualizations.

There are lots of tables in Google's Fusion Tables which are publicly accessible which you can use to start mapping.

Once you select a table and select the "Visualize----->Map" option, you have the option to Export to KML, Get KML Network Link or Get Embeddable Link for your website or blog.

With snow falling in Florida Panhandle yesterday, Florida became the 49th state to have snow on the ground as of yesterday evening. Hawaii being the only state not having any snow. This map from National weather service shows that 2/3rd of United States had snow on the ground as of 12.01 AM on Friday. With Florida and other Southern states getting the snow later on in the day.. now we have "United States of Snow".

At the same time, those weird weather forces are turning Canada's Winter Olympics into the bring-your-own-snow games.

Who's the Great White North now?

"I'm calling it the upside-down winter," said David Robinson, head of the Global Snow Lab at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

So how has it been where you are. As for where I am.... Here in mid-west (SE Michigan), last year we saw most snow in prev 50 years and this year we have had just one, sort of significant snow event otherwise its been relatively quiet.

Google Maps has added a lot of experimental features to its maps.google.com page. To enable/select each of the feature, look for the "New" link at the top right on the Google Maps page.

One of the features lets you rotate the maps. Here is India upside down: (Other features listed below)

Drag 'N' Zoom: Zooming in on a specific part of the map is now fast and easy. Simply click the Drag 'n' Zoom button, draw a box on the map, and zoom! You're there!

Aerial Imagery: Add Aerial imagery to the map! Aerial imagery gives you rotatable, high-resolution overhead imagery presented in a new perspective. Currently imagery is only available in certain areas, but we're adding more all the time.

Back to Beta Tag: Gmail isn't the only one that can enjoy a BETA tag.

Where in the World Game geography game: Test your knowledge of world geography! Guess the name of the country from satellite imagery, and try to beat your top score!

Rotable Maps: Tired of North always being up? Add rotatable map types and give East, West and South a fair go.

What's around here: Adds a second search button that searches for "*", returning the top results in the current view. A great way to browse the map.

Lat Long Tooltip: Displays a tooltip next to the mouse cursor showing the latlng directly underneath it.

Smart Zoom: Ever zoom in too far and get the message "We don't have imagery at this zoom level"? Ensure you don't see it again, with Smart Zoom, which will check in advance what imagery exists, and ensure you can't zoom in beyond it.

On the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, GeoEye releases a image of Tehran, Iran taken from 423 miles in space. The image was taken on February 11th at 10.47 AM. Google Maps and Google Earth imagery updated - includes #Haiti

Google LatLong Blog reports imagery updates for Google Maps and Google Earth which includes more updates for Haiti. To see which areas have been updated, download this KML for Google Earth or view the updates in Google Maps. The updated areas are highlighted in red.

Also looks like Haiti gets more updates. Here's a image from Western Haiti region of Leogane which shows people camping out. If you pan out you can see the devastation caused by the earthquake.

Fortune has a list out there of the Best Companies which have job openings of at least 500 or more. So who are these companies and where are they located. I have mapped out the headquarters of these "Best Companies" on Google Maps. The map shows a sidebar with the list of the companies that are hiring. If you click on the names of these companies a information window pops up on the map above the location of the headquarters of the company. Additional details shown in this information window are Company Name, Address, Number of Job Openings and the type of job openings. The information window has a forward and back arrow which will take you to the next/previous "Best Company" Location.

Turn a Hamburger into Cheeseburger and you get fired #mcdonalds #fail

McDonalds fast food chain in Lemmer, Netherlands fired a worker who

sold a hamburger to a co-worker who then asked for cheese, which she added.

McDonald gave this excuse for firing

this turned the hamburger into a cheeseburger, and so she should have charged more. She had broken staff rules prohibiting free gifts to family, friends or colleagues.

Fortunately for the worker the courts in Netherlands ordered McDonalds to pay the former employee more than 4,200 euros ($5,900; £3,660) for the last five months of her contract. In a written statement the court said

The dismissal was too severe a measure. It is just a slice of cheese

There are lot of people wanting to help out with the "Haiti Earthquake" relief effort. But where do you look for help? Allforgood.org is one such place where you can look for volunteer opportunities.

Fortunately Allforgood provides us with a API to access "volunteer opportunities" data. So I signed up for access to Allforgood API and created a "Haiti Earthquake" Volunteer Opportunities Google Maps Mashup.

Initially when you load the mashup page it shows you volunteer opportunities in your area (if any). However you can look for opportunities in other areas by typing in the location in the form located on the left side of the map.

(Note: I tried various international locations (outside US) and it looks like there is no data available for outside US)

Galápagos Islands - Question for #googlemaps

I am looking at our world on Google Maps and I come across Galápagos Islands which is west of Ecuador (South America). Google Maps has the Galápagos Islands enclosed in a Polygon/Polyline. I am just curios as to why. Is it because it is a UNESCO World Heritage site? but then I look at other UNESCO world Heritage sites and those are not enclosed in a Polygon/Polyline. Does anyone have an answer?
