A Massive Earthquake (8.8) hits Chile this morning. Twitter activity from region is just now picking up. Here's a Map (Google Maps) I put together which grabs tweets from Santiago and 1500 miles out and plots it on Google Maps.

Augmented Reality Twitter Application for iPhone

First there was "Layar" a Mobile Augmented Reality Browser and now comes a new Augmented Reality App for iPhone - "Twitter 360" - which helps you to visualize your Twitter Friends. Cool.. (via GoogleMapsMania)

When you look through your iPhone camera with Twitter 360 you can view information windows superimposed on the screen showing the direction and distance away of your Twitter friends. Twitter 360 also shows arrows on the screen that, as you move around, uses the iPhone's in built compass to point you in the direction of a chosen Twitter friend.

President Obama declares H1N1 emergency #swineflu

CNN is reporting that President Obama has declared H1N1 emergency which made me go back to my swine flu Google Map and see how folks are reacting to this on twitter. Here's a screen shot. You can click on different regions mentioned on the left hand side of the map and see the reaction from those regions.

Happy Diwali to everyone. Here's a look at "Happy Diwali" Tweets mapped out on Google Maps.

Party Princess - Zoe Griffin mapping her tweets

London's self-styled party princess Zoe Griffin relaunched her website which now has a Google Map which shows her latest tweets.

The map animates through Zoe's latest messages on Twitter. The information windows for each Tweet include forward and back buttons, so it is also possible to manually navigate through the messages.

Tweet your Senator on Health care Reform

Tweet your Senator is a Google Maps Mashup which plots your Tweet on Google Maps. This mashup a feature of BarackObama.com was launched in late July. (via Mashable)

To use it, you enter your zip code and the mashup will create a pre-populated tweet which is targeted for a Senator from your State. Even though the pre-poulated tweet is pro Health Care Reform you can edit it and express your opinion either way, just leave the hash-tags alone though.

Google Mapping the Flight Status Tweets

Commercial jets (ok not the jets but the airlines) are now Tweeting. Lufthansa has set up a new service called MySkyStatus which automatically posts the current position of your flight to Twitter (via). The service supposedly updates your twitter status with your flight location. I put together this quick Google Maps Mashup which shows these Flight Tweets (with the flight location) on Google Maps.

NFL Players Tweeting

Mashable has a post titled "Football Tweets: 20 Must-Follow NFL Players on Twitter". I have taken this list and mashed up the last 10 tweets of each of these players with Google Maps. Just a couple of them have their location geotagged while Reggie Bush of New Orleans Saints has his location as "The Best Coast" which Google thinks is in New Zealand.

Twitter goes Big Time with Location Data

Twitter announced today that it will release a new API that will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet (via Google Maps Mania and Programmable Web)

This is interesting because just last week I created a Google Maps Mashup of users last X number of tweets. While looking at the Twitter API related to user tweets I found out that Twitter does store location information with each status update. However the way this worked was I had to update my location (via tweetie) on my iPhone and this updated location would be attached to my next status update. So hopefully with the new API the tweet location update process would be much simpler.

Here's an example of Tweets(status updates) with location information. User is Zoe Griffin a "Celebrity Gossip Columnist" from UK. The map moves on to the next location after every 8 seconds.

Bollywood Celebrities on Twitter #bollywood

Here is a Google Maps Mashup showing the last 10 tweets of each of the bollywood celebrities. Click on the radio button on the left to select the Bollywood Celebrity whose tweets you want to see.

The Map automatically moves on to the next tweet after every 8 seconds. You can however disable it by clicking on forward/back arrows in the information window above the marker. Currently the Bollywood Celebrities show on this map are Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, Uday Chopra, Dino Morea, Mallika Sherawat and Karan Johar. If you know of more Bollywood Celebrities who are on Twitter please do let me know and I will add it.

India's Bollywood joins the Twitter Bandwagon

Following on the heels of Hollywood celebrities, now Bollywood celebrities have joined the twitter bandwagon. Some of the Bollywood Celebrities on Twitter are Priyanka Chopra, Uday Chopra, Karan Johar, Dino. If you know names of more Bollywood Celebrities on Twitter than please share it with us. Thanks to these celebrities Twitter witnessed a huge traffic growth and registered a 74% jump (in terms of unique users) in March 2009 in India. (via Huffington Post).

Your Latest Twitter Status on Google Maps

My latest Google Maps Mashup takes your latest Twitter Status Update along with your profile location and displays it on Google Maps. The more detailed your profile location is, the higher the zoom level. So if you have a iPhone generated profile location (which is in the form of (latitude, longitude)) you will get the highest zoom level. Ford's Fiesta Movement Mapped (#fiestamovement)

Some time back Ford recruited 100 "Agents" to test drive their Ford Fiesta (to be launched in 2010/2011). These agents will spend 6 months behind the wheel of their own Fiesta, lifestreaming their experiences on Twitter/YouTube.

Kids are home today - Schools closed because of Swine Flu Scare

Plymouth Canton Schools in Michigan, the district I live in is closed today and tomorrow because of suspected Swine Flu case. Its the 3rd largest school district in Michigan with approximately 19,000 students. There are other schools which are closed here in the Metro Detroit area also. (source Detroit Free Press)

Last week I created a Google Map+Twitter Swine Flu Map which showed tweets from various regions in United States and Europe.

Now that this thing has hit very close to home, I decided to look at tweets related to Swine Flu in the state of Michigan. With Lansing, Michigan as base I searched for Tweets within 175 miles radius from Lansing, Michigan. Check out the Swine Flu related tweets in Michigan in this Google Maps Mashup.

AIG Campaign Contributions - Google Mapping Top 100 Recipients

The Outrage over AIG bonuses continue and now bunch of media outlets have published names of politicians who have received campaign contributions from AIG. One of the sites I looked at was Opensecrets.org.

So I have taken the data from opensecrets.org and mapped it out on Google Maps. The map shows home locations of politicians who have received campaign contributions. Majority are concentrated in the North East.

Layoff Chatter on Twitter

November, 2008 saw job losses upwards of 533,000 which was the worst in 34 years. According to the labor department unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent last month which is the highest reading since 1993. That is terrible and that too so close to the holidays.

Twitter is one of the places to find out where the layoffs are taking place because some layoffs might not make it to front page news. I have put together this quick Google Maps Mashup of Twitter statuses of folks talking about layoffs.

So what do folks on Twitter have to say about "Auto Bailout". I have pulled in tweets from North America as it relates to "Auto Bailout" and in addition I have mapped it to their profile location on Google Maps.

Here's a quick mashup I put together of Twitter Tweets as it relates to Mumbai Terror Attacks along with Google Maps + YouTube video. It shows on Google Maps where in the world people are twittering on Mumbai Terror Attacks. It also shows the latest YouTube videos.

Moms respond to Motrin via Twitter and YouTube

Motrin came out with a ad targeting babywearing moms with something like "We feel your pain". This did not go well with Moms. Makes you wonder who they consulted before coming up with this ad.

Moms are angry with MOTRIN and they have taken to Twitter and YouTube to express their displeasure. Result: As of this writing Motrin's website was down. They might be taking their ad down.

I quickly put together a page which shows "Motrin/Mom Chatter" on Twitter. In addition I pull in videos related to "Motrin Moms" from YouTube. All this is shown on Google Maps.

Los Angeles Fire Tweets - Google Maps Mashup

Southern California has been hit by wildfires which were driven by hurricane-strength winds. Lot of folks have lost homes. Other then CNN and other media outlets how does one get information as to what is happening on the ground there in Southern California?

Twitter is a great tool to get a feel of what the situation is on the ground. With the help of Twitter Search API + Google Maps API, I have put together a Gooogle Maps Mashup which shows you the tweets as it relates to Los Angeles Fires.
