On this Day in 1977 - Tenerife Disaster

On March 27th, 1977, 2 Boeing 747 airliners (Pan AM flight 736 and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight 4805) collied at Los Rodeos Airport located at Tenerife, Canary Islands , Spain (Google Maps View). Million Dollar Homes being rented for $150 a month in Hawaii

Japanese Billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto will be renting his million dollar homes located in exclusive oceanside Kahala Avenue area, Hawaii (Google Maps View) to native Hawaiian families for $150 a month.

Why is he doing this? Quoting him - "because the affluent people can help the least fortunate people." (Source: CNN)

Boy Scout missing from Traphill, North Carolina

(UPDATE: CNN is reporting that Michael Auberry has been found and that he is in good condition. CNN further states that Michael Auberry wandered away from his campsite because he planned to hitchhike home since he was homesick)

12 year old Boy Scout Michael Auberry went missing on March 17th, 2007 from Traphill, North Carolina.

Quoting CNN
Michael and his fellow Boy Scouts were camping north of Wilkesboro, along the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Virginia state line.

1993 Mumbai Bombings

Today is the 14th anniversary of Mumbai Bombings. On March 12th, 1993 a series of 15 bomb explosions took place in Mumbai, India. The targets were Hotels, Banks, Office Buildings. About 257 people perished with over 1400 injured.

Today in History - Mahatma Gandhi's Salt March

On March 12th 1930 Mahatma Gandhi along with 78 other men started his 23 day (240 miles) Salt March on foot from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, Gujarat. This march was an act of protest against the Salt Tax imposed by Britain on Colonial, India.

Newborn abducted from a hospital in Lubbock, Texas

A 3 day old girl was abducted from Covenant Lakeside hospital (Google Maps View) in Lubbock Texas by a woman posing as a nurse.

Quoting CNN:
Officers are hunting a 5-foot-3-inch woman seen on security cameras in pink scrubs with purple and blue flowers.

The African-American infant, Mychael Darthard-Dawodu, has jaundice and weighs about 6 pounds, according to the Amber Alert issued by Lubbock Police Department.

Anyone with information about the kidnapping is asked to call the Lubbock Police Department at 806-775-2788, 806-775-2816 or 806-741-1000.

Hong Kong Native elected to Political Office in Northern Ireland - A first

Chinese Media reports that Anna Lo a Hong Kong native became the first Chinese person elected to a political office in Europe. She finished 3rd in the South Belfast Constituency, Ireland.

Quoting AP:

Lo was one of seven people elected to the 108-member Northern Ireland Assembly from the Alliance Party, which seeks to draw support from all sides of the community.

SUV Joyride thru a mall in Augusta, Georgia

Someone decided to go on a joyride in his SUV thru "Augusta Mall" in Augusta, Georgia. The driver is in jail tonight charged with several serious crimes, including DUI.

Indonesian Airliner crashes on Landing

Garuda Airlines an Indonesian Airliner crashed upon landing at Yogyakarta (located on island of Java - Google Maps View) on a flight from Jakarta, Indonesia.

BBC Reports:
The Boeing 737-400, owned by state airline Garuda, was said to be carrying 140 people. Officials say 93 survivors have so far been accounted for.
The plane was carrying Indonesian public figures and Australian government officials and journalists on their way to a meeting with the Australian foreign minister who is visiting Indonesia this week.

Google Maps with Circular Markers

I just noticed this. Maybe it has been there for a while and my searches on Google Maps had never returned results marked with circular markers.

On Google Maps if you see results returned which are marked off with circular markers it means that the "Placement on the map is approximate". Take a look at this search for Best Buy in the Atlanta area.

Atlanta Bus Tragedy - Google Maps View

There was a tragic bus accident in Atlanta, Georgia where 6 members of a Baseball team from Bluffton University, Ohio died and numerous others were injured. This happened when the bus plunged down onto southbound lanes of I-75 (more at CNN)

Alabama High School Destroyed by Tornado

CNN is reporting that atleast 5 people died at a High School in Enterprise, Alabama which was hit today (03/01/2007) by a Tornado.

Laren Allgood a reporter from Enterprise Ledger had this to say:
The sprawling high school "looked like a bomb dropped on [it.] All the school buses are demolished,"
